Towards Full Support of Modeling and Querying Temporal Aspects in Relational Database Systems
Modeling and querying capabilities for temporal real world aspects have proved to be highly desirable to be integrated in database systems. In this paper we give an overview of these capabilities in the context of relational databases, present past and current work on extending the relational model and its query languages and discuss the problems and drawbacks of these approaches. Subsequently we design an extended relational model and a query language that overcome the most important of these problems. This language bases on tirst order predicate logic and can be viewed as an extension of the logic oriented query language DATALOG.
