Datasets Acquired in a Comparative Study on the Impact of Higher Distance Education with Traditional Correspondence and Interactive Online Media
Although many innovations exploiting web technologies have been suggested in higher distance education, very little original research exists investigating the impact of Web-based learning environments on distance students' learning process and outcomes. To close this gap, an interdisciplinary team of researchers from FernUniversität in Hagen and the University of Paderborn performed a study with FernUniversität students enrolled in a beginners course on object-oriented programming to collect and evaluated a range of datasets including: 1) student responses on a competence test (AnswersCompT.xlsx) in the topic area that aimed to measure the competence gain of students related to key learning objectives of the course; (the test was taken twice, before the semester started and at the end of the course; the German test (Kompetenztest.pdf) and an English translation (CompetenceTest.pdf), and a table with graded responses (PointsAchievedInCompT.xlsx) are also provided;) 2) raw data derived from log data produced by a volunteer group of online students while working with an interactive online version of a selected course module (OnlineBehaviour.xlsx); 3) feed-back data from those online students who responded to a technology assessment questionnaire (TAM_Questions_de.pdf, TAM_Questions_en.pdf) capturing their perception of the online learning materials and learning environment (TAM-Answers_de.xlsx); 4) formal assessment data acquired from a written examination test carried out at the end of the course.
