In search of a new university paradigm in a knowledge society
This Monograph that follows on from my ZIFF Papiere 105 (1997) documents my longitudinal research programme that seeks a new university paradigm for the emerging knowledge society in an era of rapid technological change and globalisation. The modern university designed for the past needs of the industrial society is based on transport and building technologies that are increasing in costs. At the same time, the Internet and clusters of new technologies such as virtual reality, HyperReality, nanotechnology and artificial intelligence are becoming available, providing three dimensional wraparound environments revolutionising how we learn, think, work, bank and shop. A new kind of university based on computers and telecommunications is needed to provide effective and cost-efficient quality-assured education, that match global skills in the use of technology, delivered interactively, multilingually at the convenience of the learner in culturally appropriate ways.
