General:

What does Open Access mean?

Open Access means unrestricted and free access to scientific and academic information. In addition to ensuring that access to scientific literature and materials is as free as possible from technical, legal and monetary barriers, the aim is to maximize the dissemination of scientific information. The reasons for Open Access include :

  • public access to publicly funded research results,
  • increased visibility and citation of documents,
  • good retrievability via search engines and verification services,
  • the promotion of international and interdisciplinary cooperation,
  • the promotion of research efficiency and
  • the retention of license rights by the authors.

How long do the documents remain available on deposit_hagen?

Documents remain available on deposit_hagen for at least five years.

Can documents be deleted after they have already been published?

Documents that have already been published cannot be deleted or subsequently changed. This guarantees the authenticity of the documents and makes them comparable with printed publications. New versions of documents must be re-uploaded and are given a new persistent identifier (URN).

Are the publications citable?

Publications on deposit_hagen are equivalent to printed publications and can therefore also be cited. Citation is guaranteed by a persistent identifier. deposit_hagen uses URNs (uniform resource names) for this purpose. You can find more information on URNs at: http://www.dnb.de/EN/urnservice

Publishing:

Which documents can be published?

Scientific publications of any kind can be published on deposit_hagen. This includes articles, essays, research papers, dissertations, etc. In the case of Bachelor’s and Master’s theses and coursework, the consent of the examiners is required for publication for reasons of quality assurance.

How can documents be published?

Which file formats can be submitted?

Generally speaking, documents must be submitted in PDF format. Appropriate formats can be submitted for audio and video files. Uploaded documents may not be protected using technical protection measures.

Why can’t the submitted documents be provided with technical protection measures?

To enable long-term archiving, files often have to be re-saved and transferred to other systems. It is therefore important that the files are neither encrypted nor password-protected.

What is a CC license?

Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization that offers ready-made license agreements for the release of legally protected content. There are a total of six of these standard license agreements, also known as CC licenses.

  • Attribution/BY: Credit must be given to the creator. (included in all licenses)
  • NoDerivatives/ND: No derivatives or adaptations of the work are permitted.
  • NonCommercial/NC: Only noncommercial uses of the work are permitted.
  • ShareAlike/SA: If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.

What is the purpose of the declaration of consent and what does it contain?

The “Declaration of consent for electronic publishing on deposit_hagen” serves as legal protection on the part of the FernUniversität and is decisive for the legally flawless provision and archiving of documents. You can find more information on the contents of the declaration of consent under Author information.

How can I edit or add to the metadata I have entered?

If you have made a mistake when entering the metadata or you would like to add additional metadata, click on “Actions” in the top right-hand corner. This opens a drop-down menu. Select the option “Edit the document.” This will open the metadata input form, which you should already be familiar with from the publication process. You can edit and add to your metadata here. Click on “Save” to save your changes or “Cancel” to discard them.

Please note: You can only work on your own changes until the editorial team edits your document. The editorial team takes a close look at all entries and corrects or adds to the document’s metadata if necessary. If they find anything incorrect or incomplete, it will be corrected. Usage:

How can I search for publications on deposit_hagen?

There are a number of ways to search on deposit_hagen:

In a simple search (search slot in the blue menu bar), the terms or phrases you enter are searched for together across all search fields (title, author, keyword, etc.).

In the advanced search (via Search -> Advanced), the search can be restricted to certain fields. Via this function, you can carry out a targeted search in the title, in the name, in the metadata and in the files. The search in the files corresponds to a full text search. The advanced search can also be restricted to the institution in which the document was published.

You can narrow down your search even further by using the expert search. For example, you can also restrict your search to a specific document type or a time period in which the document was published.

It is also possible to browse the stock by the faculties/institutions of the FernUniversität, the document type, the subject groups assigned or by specific persons.

If you find any documents that are of interest to you, you can add them to a watch list. There is a small “Actions” wheel next to each document in the hit list. Click “Add to watchlist” to add the document to your watchlist. On the details page of a document, there is a blue button “+Add to watchlist” at the top right. You can call up the watch list itself via the bookmark symbol in the blue menu bar. You can export it in various data formats.

Is it possible to print out documents?

Generally speaking, you may print out documents.

Can I download, permanently save and/or copy documents?

The same statutory copyright provisions apply to documents offered in electronic form via data networks as to printed publications. Documents can be copied, downloaded and saved on local computers, however, they are still subject to German copyright law (Urheberrechtsgesetz UrHG) without restriction, which states, among other things, that

  • individual reproductions such as copies and printouts are made exclusively for private or other personal use and may not serve any commercial purpose (Section 53 UrhG).
  • the production of further copies may only be carried out with the author’s express consent.

Users are personally responsible for compliance with all legal provisions.

What do I do if I have forgotten my password?

If you have forgotten your password, please send us a short email stating your user name to publizieren.ub@fernuni-hagen.de. We will send you a new, temporary password which you can use to log in. Please replace this with a new password of your own choosing immediately after logging in for the first time.
